Jazz / Contemporary Jazz; Crossover Jazz
Letter to Evan finds contemporary jazz pianist David Benoit in a context much closer to the more traditional acoustic jazz trio format. No accident there as the title tune is composed by none other than the legendary Bill Evans. Benoit plays with style and finesse throughout and adds his subtle cinematic arranging touches to tunes like "On Golden Pond" and "Looking Over Eastlake". The core rhythm section of bassist John Patitucci and drummer Peter Erskine lend a swinging credibility to the proceedings and the great giutarist Larry Carlton is prominently featured on several tracks. This was the first of his many recordings that David wrote his own liner notes for.
