Recorded: Cary Out Studios, New York, New York
A radical departure for jazz pianist Marc Cary, Rhodes Ahead, Vol. 1 features programmed beats, Moog synthesizers, and, as the title indicates, lots of the Fender Rhodes electric piano. The record has little to do with jazz, but it is a respectable foray into the ever-evolving club/dance genre. Tarus Mateen, one of Cary's like-minded colleagues from the acoustic jazz world, plays a mean electric bass throughout the album. Drummer Terreon Gully, also a jazz player, sits in for the restlessly funky "Transient Treasure" (parts one and two) and the super-slick "Home Comin'." Several guests share drum programming duties with Cary, and trumpet sensation Roy Hargrove contributes suave background vocals to "Inside Your Self (You'll Find Love)." ---David R. Adler, allmusic
