British jazzman Vic Lewis made his first recording in London in 1937. Since then, he has built a huge discography of recordings, taking up more than 12 pages in Tom Lord's The Jazz Discography. Sprinkled among them are recordings he made in the U.S. with American jazzmen, mostly on the West Coast. Here he is with his West Coast All-Stars paying tribute to Gerry Mulligan as composer. Lewis had long used Mulligan's charts for his own band and recorded an album of Mulligan's music in 1954. On this album, arrangements are by such other masters of that craft as Bill Holman, Manny Albam, and Bob Brookmeyer. All but one of the tunes are by Mulligan, the exception being the Duke Ellington/Peggy Lee "I'm Gonna Go Fishing." The instrumentation for the session is somewhat unique, two trombones and one trumpet, plus rhythm. Andy Martin is the lead person on the trombone and shows his prowess with the slide instrument on such cuts as "I'm Gonna Go Fishing" and "I Heard the Shadows Dancing." (This may be the premiere recording of the latter piece). But Martin's tour de force is the first iteration of "Noblesse" where, through the magic of dubbing, he is a one-person trombone choir. But Martin is not the only performer who is spotlighted. Bob Summers' trumpet is prominent on "Go Home" and pianist Christian Jacob is the sole performer on "Ballade." Ray Brinker and Trey Henry trade eights on "Bwebidda Bobbida." The melding of smooth trombone tones throughout recalls Urbie Green's trombone groups and the J. J. Johnson/Kai Winding Trombone Octet. The high quality of the playing of Mulligan's music on this CD is in and of itself a fine tribute to the composer/arranger/baritone saxophonist. Recommended.
