Hummin' to Myself is a welcome return for fans of Ronstadt's trio of groundbreaking recordings with Nelson Riddle in the 1980s, which made her the first pop/rock star to have multi-platinum success presenting classic American standards. Elegant arrangements by pianist/composer Alan Broadbent on Hummin' to Myself highlight Ronstadt's superb vocal performances, supported by some of the best players in jazz today. The disc is Ronstadt's first new studio recording since her 2000 Christmas album.
For Hummin' to Myself, Ronstadt chose both popular favorites and rare gems from the mid-20th century flowering of American songwriting which became known as the "great American songbook". Ronstadt sings songs by Frank Loesser ("Never Will I Marry" and "I've Never Been in Love Before") and Cole Porter ("Get out of Town," "Miss Otis Regrets), and "I Fall in Love Too Easily", which was sung by Frank Sinatra in the 1944 film Anchors Aweigh. Ronstadt begins the CD with "Tell Him I Said Hello", a poignant ballad recorded only once in 1955 by jazz great Betty Carter. Other songs on the collection include such unforgettable melodies as "Cry Me a River" and "I'll Be Seeing You," along with the title track, and Duke Ellington's beautiful "Day Dream".
Hummin' to Myself was co-produced by two of Ronstadt's longtime GRAMMY-winning collaborators: engineer George Massenburg and songwriter John Boylan. The recording features a group of A-list musicians, including Alan Broadbent, Christian McBride, David "Fathead" Newman, Lewis Nash, Peter Erskine and Roy Hargrove. Recorded in high-resolution 96/24 audio by Massenburg, the album abounds in superlatives, with which Ronstadt's vocals are beautifully matched.
