Donald Byrd - Trumpet
Doug Watkins - Bass
Frank Foster - Sax (Tenor)
Tommy Flanagan - Piano

Having recorded All Night Long a week earlier, Kenny Burrell went into the studio on January 4, 1957 for a sequel album to be called, probably inevitably, All Day Long. Both have become classic examples of the blowing session, a jazz recording phenomenon that flowered with the advent of the long-playing record. The formula, which produced glories when it worked and boredom when it didn't, was simple: A handful of musicians plus a handful of tunes, which were usually written shortly before the session or invented on the spot out of familiar harmonic material like the blues and "I Got Rhythm." This Burrell blowing session is a prime example of his ability to mold a pickup band of all-stars into a cohesive unit and produce a memorable recording.

* Bob Weinstock - Supervisor
* Ira Gitler - Liner Notes
* Phil DeLancie - Digital Remastering
* Rudy Van Gelder - Engineer

For this CD reissue, "C.P.W." has been added to the original LP program. Guitarist Kenny Burrell and the young all-stars (trumpeter Donald Byrd, Frank Foster on tenor, pianist Tommy Flanagan, bassist Doug Watkins, and drummer Art Taylor) sound fine on the four group compositions, but the 18-minute blues "All Day Long" is easily the most memorable selection. Well worth picking up, as is All Night Long, which was recorded a week earlier. [The 1990 reissue adds "C.P.W." as a bonus track.]

Kenny Burrell

Active Decades: '50s, '60s, '70s, '80s, '90s and '00s
Born: Jul 31, 1931 in Detroit, MI
Genre: Jazz
Styles: Bop, Cool, Ballads, Soul-Jazz, Hard Bop, Mainstream Jazz

Kenny Burrell has been a very consistent guitarist throughout his career. Cool-toned and playing in an unchanging style based in bop, Burrell has always been the epitome of good taste and solid swing. Duke Ellington's favorite guitarist (though he never actually recorded with him), Burrell started playing guitar when he was 12, and he debuted on records with Dizzy Gillespie in 1951. Part of the fertile Detroit jazz scene of the early '50s, Burrell moved to New York in 1956. Highly in demand from the start, Burrell appeared on a countless number of records as a leader and as a sideman. Among his more notable associations were dates with Stan Getz, Billie Holiday, Milt Jackson, John Coltrane, Gil Evans, Sonny Rollins, Quincy Jones, Stanley Turrentine, and Jimmy Smith. Starting in the early '70s, Burrell began leading seminars and teaching, often focusing on Duke Ellington's music. He toured with the Phillip Morris Superband during 1985-1986, and led three-guitar quintets, but generally Kenny Burrell plays at the head of a trio/quartet.
