When Charlie Byrd took to the stage as the opening act of the 26th Fujitsu-Concord Jazz Festival, it became apparent within the first few phrases of Antonio Carlos Jobim's "Favela" that his was going to be one tough act to follow. On this captivating August 1994 evening, Byrd - the guitarist responsible for importing the mesmerizing sound of Brazil's bossa nova to the United States in the '60s - and his empathetic musical cohorts displayed the perfect balance of virtuosity and sensitivity in their brilliant interpretations of Antonio Carlos Jobim's distinctively beautiful melodies, harmonies and contagious bossa nova rhythms. The result is surely one of the most engaging live recordings in Charlie Byrd's legendary body of work.

Recorded live in August of 1994 at the Fujitsu-Concord 26th Jazz Festival in Concord, CA, Homage to Jobim features guitarist Charlie Byrd performing the music of innovative Brazilian guitarist/composer Antonio Carlos Jobim. No stranger to the music of Jobim, Byrd was one of the first musicians to introduce North American audiences to the bossa nova. As such, fans of Byrd will be familiar with many of these songs as they became staples of his live performances. Nonetheless, as Byrd passed away only a few years after this concert, the album stands as a heartfelt tribute not only to the composer of the songs, but also to Byrd's life and devotion to the music he loved. Joining in the festivities here are such longtime Byrd collaborators as harmonica player Hendrik Meurkens, clarinetist Ken Peplowski, pianist Allen Farnham, bassist Bill Douglass, drummer Chuck Redd and percussionist Michael Spiro. ---Matt Collar, All Music Guide |
