Jazz / Post-Bop
Recorded: Jun 1-2, 1993
Grand Central is a straight-ahead, all-acoustic jazz quintet that, in 1993, consisted of Ravi Coltrane on tenor and soprano sax, Antoine Roney on strictly tenor sax, Jacky Terrasson on piano, Santi DeBriano on bass, and Cindy Blackman on drums. Nothing earth-shattering or unusual occurs on the group's debut album, Sax Storm, a conventional post-bop/hard-bop date that was recorded in 1993 but often sounds like it could have been done in the early '60s. Still, performances of overdone standards like "Body and Soul," "You Go to My Head," and Miles Davis' "Solar" (one of the many bop tunes based on "How High the Moon") are decent and competent, if predictable, and it's clear that all of the musicians have solid chops. ---Alex Henderson, allmusic |
