Jazz / Post-Bop; Hard Bop; Modal Music
Recorded: Apr 29, 1964-Dec 16, 1989
The 22 selections on this 2 CD set span 29 years and paint a vivid portrait of one of the least flamboyant and most original musical minds in the history of jazz. From his saxophone solos to his compositions to his conversations, it is immediately evident that Wayne Shorter sees things from an entirely different angle than the rest of us. Like Thelonious Monk, his music seems off-center, but always feels just right. Disc 1 contains 12 compositions from nine of Shorter's great '60s Blue Note albums with such stellar sideman as Lee Morgan, Freddie Hubbard, McCoy Tyner, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, Elvin Jones, Tony Williams and John McLaughlin. The ten Shorter compositions on Disc 2 are culled from sessions on which he was a featured sideman. In addition to six of his finest contributions from his years with Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers (1959-64), tunes he recorded with Freddie Hubbard, Lee Morgan, Michel Petrucciani and The Manhattan Project are included. |
