Keith Jarrett - piano
Gary Peacock - bass
Paul Motian - drums

On AT THE DEER HEAD INN, pianist Keith Jarrett returns to the very club in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania that supported him during his formative years as a music student. Jarrett plays seven standards on this disc, and each tune highlights his inimitable stream-of-consciousness approach to improvisation. Although Jarrett's longtime cohort, drummer Jack DeJohnette, does not appear on this album, Paul Motian fills in wonderfully and forms a remarkable rhythm section with bassist Gary Peacock.

There are many fine moments on this record. For example, the languid, tear-stained ballad "You Don't Know What Love Is" takes on new light with this ensemble. Here, the listener is whisked away to another world and entranced by many musical transformations in the song's nearly 13-minute run, including a couple of groove variations and plenty of harmonic diversions. However, it's always great to hear Jarrett really burn in a straight-ahead fashion, and "You and the Night and the Music" is just the track to satisfy such cravings.

Keith Jarrett returns to his roots, both musically and physically, on this CD. His first significant jazz gig was at the Deer Head Inn in Allentown, PA (his hometown) and 30 years later Jarrett agreed to perform at the venue again. With the assistance of bassist Gary Peacock and drummer Paul Motian, Jarrett plays six jazz standards (several of which were associated with Miles Davis) plus Jaki Byard's medium-tempo blues, "Chandra." The inventive interpretations give listeners plenty of surprises and variety, making this a very enjoyable outing.
