Keith Jarrett - piano
Gary Peacock - double-bass
Jack DeJohnette - drums

The opening number of STANDARDS LIVE, "Stella By Starlight," should give listeners a hint of the dynamic, muscular improvisations of Keith Jarrett's trio. Shifting from the piano's elegant, soothing intro, to its fluid, staccato exploration among surging, bass and drum lines, then back again-- these changes, spirals, and lapses in and out of song structure are what make for the ensemble's intense, peculiar magic. In "The Wrong Blues," and "Falling In Love With You," Jarrett's use of space, his energetic method of attack, and his rapid, often surprising, runs of notes weave a web around Gary Peacock's nimble bass and DeJohnette's accent-filled drumming.

"Too Young To Go Steady" and "The Way You Look Tonight" (featuring a great solo by DeJohnette) continue to suggest, follow, and resist contrapuntal and polyrhythmic interaction among the musicians. The only word of caution regards Jarrett's flat singing, whines and grunts as he plays, which can be heard quite clearly over the piano microphone (some may find this charming, others annoying). Consider it a sign of authenticity, proof that you are listening to one of the very finest improvisatory jazz pianists of the latter 20th century.

Standards Live, from 1987, continued at the same high level of previous Standards, Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 with pianist Keith Jarrett often recalling his early influence, Bill Evans. The well-integrated trio (Gary Peacock, bass; Jack DeJohnette, drums) plays three frequently performed tunes and three obscurities. The interplay between the players was constantly impressive.
