Jazz
Recorded in June, 1957 at Radio Recorders, Hollywood, CA.
Marty Paich (piano); Red Mitchell (bass); Mel Lewis (drums)
In July of 1957, shortly after making this recording, Marty Paich became musical director of Mode Records. As a result, he was directly involved in over half of the sessions Mode recorded. Few recordings exist of Marty Paich in a trio, especially as leader, so this album is quite a treat. The music of Marty Paich is more than the great arrangements for which he is justly famous. This album presents the many facets of his playing and writing: block chord laden ballads, great blues feeling and a jaunty swinging up tempo style. A great recording, and a fitting tribute to the outstanding musicianship of Marty Paich.
Producer: Red Clyde; Engineer: Thorne Nogar. Liner Notes: Joe Quinn; Cover Design: Eva Diana
Marty Paich became so well-known as an arranger in the 1950s that his piano playing became secondary. This session for the Mode label was Paich's only trio set. With the assistance of bassist Red Mitchell and drummer Mel Lewis, Paich plays tasteful versions of three standards, Jack Montrose's "A Dandy Line" and four of his own originals. The music is subtle and quiet but swinging and reasonably enjoyable. --- Scott Yanow, All Music Guide |
