Jazz / Big Band
Leroy Anthony was born in Dover, Ohio, in 1925. The six children in the family were exposed at a young age to music through their parents and their father led an orchestra well known in the area at dances and functions. After High School, Leroy concentrated on alto sax in a local band and gained experience. His talent was obvious and in 1946 he joined brother Ray Anthony's Orchestra as the baritone sax player. A key player in the band, Leroy or Leo, was featured on many broadcasts and recordings. His experience left him well equipped to form his own band in the 1950's. High standard playing, original writing and and the distinctive baritone sax of the leader are the reasons the band was a commercial success. |
