Bennie Wallace - tenor saxophone
Kenny Barron - piano
Eddie Gomez - bass

In 1979 Bennie Wallace burst onto the international jazz scene with his award-winning first release, "The Fourteen Bar Blues". The critical acclaim was overwhelming, hailing him as the "New Saxophone Giant", the youngest of a lineage including Ben Webster, Coleman Hawkins, Albert Ayler and Sonny Rollins. New York Arts Journal called Bennie "the most important reed player since Dolphy's and Coleman's startling work in the early sixties." Following that auspicious debut, Bennie Wallace took over the role of the forward-looking, exploratory traditionalist. He made albums as a leader for ENJA, Blue Note, Denon, Audioquest and other labels, accompanied by jazz greats like Tommy Flanagan, Chick Corea, Dave Holland, John Scofield and Elvin Jones.
After many successful years in the Hollywood film industry, Bennie Wallace has finally returned to the jazz stage in 1999 with an outstanding Gershwin tribute ("Someone To Watch Over Me"). His latest album, recorded at the Berlin JazzFest ("In Berlin"), also received ravished reviews: "A program without a single less-than-mesmerizing moment" (Don Heckman, L.A. Times). "Bennie Wallace is irrefutably one of the finest tenor saxophonists alive. Whether deconstructing or retooling a familiar ballad or adhering to the mainstream side of matters, the saxophonist sustains interest throughout. Highly recommended" (allaboutjazz.com).

On his new album "The Nearness Of You" Bennie Wallace presents a select ballad program of subtle refinement and extraordinary beauty executed by a drummer-less trio of masters. Pianist Kenny Barron (who made some 80 albums as a leader and hundreds as a sideman) is among the all-time greats on his instrument. He worked with Dizzy Gillespie, Ella Fitzgerald, Stan Getz, J.J. Johnson and other immortals and recently did a duet album with Regina Carter. Bassist Eddie Gomez, a living legend on his instrument, came to fame as a member of the Bill Evans Trio (1966-1977) and is hailed as the true successor of bass wizard Scott LaFaro. The three of them navigate ten American evergreens with unmatched artistry and unusual deepness. An instant classic of timeless mainstream jazz, excellenty recorded (CD/SACD).
