Barry Harris - Piano
Barry Harris Trio
Leroy Williams - Drums
Ron Carter - Bass

Barry Harris can play anything, from blues to ballads, from bebop to hard bop. The Detroit native showed that in early-career appearances with such giants as Dexter Gordon, Cannonball Adderley, and Lee Morgan and then with splendid albums for Riverside and Prestige. On this spirited 1969 Prestige trio date, the artist whose main model was Bud Powell but who also revered Art Tatum, Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk, and Duke Ellington, again demonstrates his many sides. Backed superbly by bassist Ron Carter and drummer Leroy Williams, the modern piano great explores such jazz classics as Coleman Hawkins's "Bean and the Boys" and Charlie Parker's "Ah-Leu-Cha" along with the seductive, undulating blues "Sun Dance" and the timeless standard "These Foolish Things." Piano trio playing doesn't get better than this.

From the opening tour de force reading of Coleman Hawkins' "Bean and the Boys" to the closing performance of Charlie Parker's "Dexterity," Magnificent brilliantly illustrates Barry Harris' unique rapport with the bop piano tradition. Absolutely unlike the enervating, curatorial approach of the neo-con movement, Harris deals with the tradition as a continuum, perpetually rejuvenating and extending it. Along with the opening and closing tracks, the classics on this 1969 date include a caressing exploration of "These Foolish Things" and a dazzling treatment of "Ah-Leu-Cha." On the latter, Harris deftly finesses the counterpoint that was handled between Charlie Parker and Miles Davis on the original 1948 Savoy recording. Magnificent's classics meld seamlessly with the Harris originals. His "You Sweet and Fancy Lady" is in a sly, soulful Bobby Timmons style. "Rouge" (not the John Lewis tune) is a poignant ballad with muscle, not mush, at its heart. "Just Open Your Heart" begins Monk-ish, then modulates to statements that are more purely Harris'. "Sun Dance" (also not the John Lewis tune) is a contemporary Latin-flavored number. Harris, whose performances here reveal new subtleties with each listening, is superbly supported by bassist Ron Carter and drummer Leroy Williams. Both play their roles fairly straight, although Williams adds some interesting oblique accents, while Carter augments the dead-on precision of his walking style with harmonic spice, knowing use of space, double stops, and strummed passages.

Barry Harris

Active Decades: '50s, '60s, '70s, '80s, '90s and '00s
Born: Dec 15, 1929 in Detroit, MI
Genre: Jazz
Styles: Bop, Hard Bop, Mainstream Jazz, Standards

One of the major bop pianists of the last half of the 20th century, Barry Harris has long had the ability to sound very close to Bud Powell, yet he can also do convincing impressions of Thelonious Monk and has his own style within the bop idiom. He was an important part of the Detroit jazz scene of the 1950s, and has been a jazz educator since that era. Harris recorded his first set as a leader while in 1958, and moved to New York in 1960, where he spent a short period with Cannonball Adderley's Quintet. He also recorded with Dexter Gordon, Illinois Jacquet, Yusef Lateef, and Hank Mobley, and was with Coleman Hawkins off and on throughout the decade (including Hawk's declining years). In the 1970s, Harris was on two of Sonny Stitt's finest records (Tune Up and Constellation), and made many recordings in a variety of settings for Xanadu. Barry Harris has mostly worked with his trio since the mid-'70s, and he has recorded as a leader for Argo (1958), Riverside, Prestige, MPS, Xanadu, and Red.
