Sometimes an artistic undertaking is way ahead of its time. Baiyina is clearly such an endeavor. Some 20 years after its incarnation, its timeless qualities are quite evident. Time is of the essence here, with such signatures as 7/4, 9/4, 6/8, and 10/9 employed on their own and sometimes mixed with 4/4. Within this rhythmic context Pat Martino, a legendary figure in contemporary guitar mastery, and his colleagues, including the late Gregory Herbert on alto saxophone and flute, and bass giant Richard Davis, brew heady, aromatic, cross-cultural themes and improvisations.
