Paul Bley - piano
Sonny Greenwich - guitar
Kazuya Tsujio - Piano

Pianist Paul Bley and guitarist Sonny Greenwich recorded these duets in 1994. Both musicians are Canadian--and the session came about after they appeared at a jazz festival in Montreal. Relying largely upon their skills as improvisers, Bley and Greenwich play off each other with a good-natured familiarity. Common ground is found in the music itself, with characteristics of the blues running through major portions of the set.

There are solo pieces by both Bley and Greenwich. They also tackle a couple standards ("I Remember Harlem" and "These Foolish Things") and a pair by two saxophone titans (Charlie Parker's "Steeplechase" and Sonny Rollins' "Pent Up House"). Most of this session is actually much less "outside" than what Bley is generally known for, but in fact, his catalog and past experience are quite deep and broad, and he has happily headed into these friendly waters throughout his career.

Musicians often spend a lifetime developing a personal sound on their instrument. A sound so distinctive that within seconds of a note being played you recognize the player. Paul Bley and Sonny Greenwich fall into that category.
Having these two distinct musical personalities record together was an idea that had been talked about for three years. In July of this year it became a reality. Paul Bley came home to play a solo concert at the Festival International de Jazz de Montreal and Sonny Greenwich made one of his all to infrequent appearances, playing an outdoor concert at the Festival.

Justin Time co-owner and producer, Jim West, saw it as a golden opportunity to have them go in the studio. This album is the result of that daylong session. It features Sonny on electric guitar, (miked accoutiscally half the time, and Paul on the concert grand.

"Outside In" is a title Sonny came up with, "I felt it reflected the approach to the music," he explained afterwards. 'Exploration of a song can start either on the outside and work in, or the reverse, in and then out."

To achieve it, both agreed to keep conversation to an absolute minimum in the studio. There was no lengthy discussion about repertoire. Any communication that was needed came from one source, the music.

For Paul and Sonny this session was about finding their similarities, not differences, about moving to the center of the music, discovering the common ground. After all, as the two are quick to point out "both the guitar and piano are stringed instruments."

Months later, the good will and enthusiasm present at the recording session remains unchanged. "I felt like we were brothers, there was a kinship" explains Paul. "We're the same generation and both Canadians." I have enormous respect for Sonny, because he's a jazz musician and in Canada they're a rare breed."

For Sonny, the album was a chance to play with someone he'd listened to and admired for years. "Whenever Paul sits down and plays the piano, he becomes a poet," says Sonny. "I've made a good friend and hope another record is possible." Gets hope it doesn't take another three years to happen!
---Ross Porter November/94
Ross Porter is the host of CBC stereo's late night jazz show, " After Hours."

This duet set by pianist Paul Bley and guitarist Sonny Greenwich, after two melodic solos by Greenwich and Bley's feature on "Arrival," becomes a loose bop session. "Meandering" is a blues and, in the tradition of Lennie Tristano, the origins of the originals "Willow" and "You Are" are not too difficult to figure out. The music does meander a bit but mostly swings in a floating way. Although there are some freer moments, this is as straight as Paul Bley has played on records in years and Sonny Greenwich also sounds fairly conservative, at least if one does not listen too closely. It's a relaxed and very interesting set.
