Eddie Gomez is best known as the longtime bassist in jazz giant Bill Evans' Trio, but has accompanied many other jazz legends including Hank Jones, McCoy Tyner, Lee Konitz and Joe Lovano. Dedication is his musical tribute to all that provoked, compelled, enchanted and inspired him to pursue a life in music, and the repertoire is full of songs that influenced his development. Gomez is performing in his preferred musical setting - the trio - utilizing Stefan Karlsson on piano, and jazz veteran Jimmy Cobb on drums. He is reunited on several tracks with the flutist and former bandmate, Jeremy Steig.

Eddie Gomez is one of the top bass virtuosos on the current jazz scene; his trio CD with veteran drummer Jimmy Cobb and rising piano star Stefan Karlsson focuses primarily on tunes he played during his 11 plus years as a member of the Bill Evans Trio. The strutting take of "On Green Dolphin Street" is matched by the leader's elegant bowing on the gorgeous yet sadly infrequently heard "Spartacus Love Theme." Karlsson penned the pretty bossa nova "Spider Song" and duets with Gomez's lightning chops on a delightful run through "Just Friends." The trio peaks during the mesmerizing arrangement of "Footprints," and they maintain this high energy level during another modal tune, "Nardis," which features guest Jeremy Steig on flute. Easily Eddie Gomez's best outing as a leader to date.

Eddie Gomez

Active Decades: '50s, '60s, '70s, '80s, '90s and '00s
Born: Oct 04, 1944 in San Juan, Puerto Rico
Genre: Jazz
Styles: Post-Bop

Eddie Gomez is a brilliant bassist whose flexibility and quick reflexes make him an ideal accompanist (although his own albums tend to be a bit erratic jazz-wise). He grew up in New York and was with the Newport Festival Youth Band during 1959-1961. After studying at Juilliard, Gomez played with Rufus Jones' sextet, Marian McPartland (1964), Paul Bley (1964-1965), Giuseppe Logan, Gerry Mulligan, and Gary McFarland, among others. Gomez came to fame during his long period with the Bill Evans Trio (1966-1977). He has since worked in a countless number of settings, including filling in for Charles Mingus (1978) and with Steps Ahead (1979-1984), Benny Wallace, Joanne Brackeen, Jack DeJohnette, Chick Corea, and in commercial settings as a studio musician. Eddie Gomez has recorded as a leader for Columbia, ProJazz, and Stretch.
