Jazz / Jazz-Rock; Avant-Garde Jazz
Recorded: Jan 5-7, 1994, RPM Studios, New York
Guitarist David Fiuczynski and keyboard player John Medeski were fellow students at the New England Conservatory during the late '80s, which exposed them to such NEC faculty presences of the period as Ran Blake, George Garzone, Mick Goodrick, Dave Holland, Joe Maneri, Bob Moses and George Russell. As the decade wore down, the pair separately decided to relocate in New York. Fuze, as the guitarist is known, formed the Screaming Headless Torsos and worked with Muhal Richard Abrams, Mike Clark (see Gramavision 79489), Billy Hart, Ronald Shannon Jackson, George Russell, Lonnie Smith, Jack Walrath and John Zorn, among others. John Medeski displayed his multi-keyboard brilliance most frequently as one-third of Medeski, Martin and Wood (see Medeski, Martin and Wood), as well as with the Lounge Lizards and Bob Moses, while he has played primarily piano with the Either/Orchestra, Christopher Hollyday, the Bill Lowe/Phillipe Crettien Quintet, Dewey Redman and the Ken Schaphorst Orchestra.
