Rhino Flashback issued this compilation of postwar recordings by the Goodman band, reorganized in 1945 barely a year after its leader ventured into retirement. Of these ten tracks, eight come from a 1946 Armed Forces Radio Service V-Disc session, including trio or quartet ensembles from his big band (only "Somebody Stole My Gal" is a full-band recording). Well recorded and lightly swinging, the tracks are interesting, but the first two tracks are far more intriguing: From an all-star session recorded three months earlier, they feature Goodman with Teddy Wilson on piano and Red Norvo on vibraphone. All in all, it's a brief, passable compilation of good music that's available elsewhere in better company. --- John Bush, All Music Guide |
