Jazz Bop Hard Bop
Recorded: Sep 27, 1960
with Dave Burns, Norman Simmons, Vic Sproles, Ben Riley
Since Johnny Griffin's precocious professional debut with Lionel Hampton in 1945, his best work has been guided by spontaneity. One of the fastest and least inhibited of tenor men, Griffin loves the challenges and excitement of the jam session. Studio Jazz Party has the spirit of the jam session, stimulating the kind of free blowing in which Griffin revels. 32 years old when the album was recorded in 1960, he was already a 15-year veteran of the jazz big leagues. The confidence and swagger of his solos speak of that experience. Griffin's sidemen for the date include the undeservedly obscure trumpeter Dave Burns, pianist Norman Simmons, and two rising stars, bassist Vic Sproles and drummer Ben Riley. The host of the party is the irrepressible raconteur, author, singer, and musician's companion Babs Gonzales. |
