Jazz Bop Hard Bop
Recorded: Jul 13-17, 1961, Plaza Sound Studios, New York, New York
Johnny Griffin (tenor saxophone); Clark Terry (trumpet, flugelhorn); Ernie Royal, Nat Adderley (trumpet); Ray Alonge (French horn); Jimmy Cleveland, Urbie Green, Paul Faulice (trombone); Barry Harris, Jimmy Jones (piano); Barry Galbraith (guitar); Ron Carter (bass); Ben Riley (drums)
Johnny Griffin's glorious memorial to Billie Holiday was completed two years to the day after her death on July 17, 1959. Deeply affected and inspired by Lady Day, Griffin poured his love and admiration into ten songs from her repertoire in a collection that remains, decades later, one of his finest achievements. The arrangements by Melba Liston and Norman Simmons provided perfect settings for the saxophonist. Although Griffin is the focal point, there are also splendid solos by Nat Adderley, Jimmy Cleveland, Clark Terry, and Barry Harris. In the years since White Gardenia, there have been countless tributes to Billie, but Griffin's remains unique in its passion and beauty. |
