Jazz / Swing; Bop
Recorded: Sep 22, 1945-Sep 19, 1955
In a very competitive field, here is arguably the finest possible double album selection comprising the cream of a unique jazz master's artistry - Erroll Garner at his best.
Jazz giant Erroll Garner (1921-1977, known because of his diminutive stature as "The Elf") was one of a kind. Among the most original pianists in the history of jazz, he was the most individual keyboard stylist to have emerged in the postwar era. He followed in the line of the great stride pianists (especially Earl Hines), but added a personal romanticism that won him universal affection comparable to an Armstrong or Waller. Garner's most famous composition Misty provides the title for Living Era's double album, which sets out to present the pianist's finest work during the marvellous decade from his earliest recordings in 1945 through to the mid 50s. Most are in his classic trio format, starting with Somebody Loves Me, Stardust and Indiana, and ending ten years later with five tracks from his most celebrated live performance, the fabulous "concert by the sea" at Carmel in 1955 (Where Or When, Autumn Leaves, I'll Remember April . . .). Also included are five remarkable solo tracks, among them his own compositions Play Piano Play and Errol's Bounce. Adding to the scope of this jazz feast are two inspired quintet recordings with Charlie Parker (Bird's Nest and Cool Blues), and there is all 9:31 of his sensational live Blue Lou with Wardell Gray's Quintet at a justly-famous "Just Jazz" concert.
