Jazz / Dixieland; Classic Jazz; New Orleans Jazz
Recorded: Feb 10, 1938-Mar 12, 1952
The soprano saxophone playing of Sidney Bechet exudes a flamboyant quality that makes this self-taught musician from New Orleans a unique figure in jazz history. And if his "French period" featured in CD1 has justifiably left imperishable souvenirs in French memories, we shouldn't let it obscure the authentic masterpieces recorded by this phenomenon some ten years earlier in the company of musicians from the other side of the Atlantic (CD2). In similar fashion, the immediate seductiveness of his saxophone's sound on the first CD is at least equal to the deep emotions distilled by the accents of his clarinet in certain titles on the second.
Disc 1: Sidney in Paris - 57:56 min. Disc 2: Sidney in New York - 65:22 min.
