Jazz / Bop Post-Bop
Recorded: Apr 11-12, 1990
Larry Coryell (guitar); Don Lanphere (saxophone); Jon Pugh (trumpet); Jeff Hay (trombone); Marc Seales (piano); Chuck Deardorf (bass); Dean Hodges (drums)
This combination works quite well. Heard here on soprano, tenor and a rare outing on alto, Don Lanphere matches up with the surprisingly flexible guitarist Larry Coryell in groups ranging from quartets to an octet. The two co-leaders and keyboardist Marc Seales contributed originals, and there are also lyrical versions of such tunes as Bill Evans' "Very Early," "Imagination," "Spring Can Really Hang You Up the Most" (a Coryell-Seales duet), "My Ideal" and Horace Silver's "Peace," which has Lanphere and Coryell as a duo. This set has quite a few surprising twists and turns, and shows that the veteran saxophonist was still very much in his musical prime as the 1990s began. ---Scott Yanow, allmusic
