Explore the natural wonders of the desert with this beautiful video tour. Kate McCabe provides the images, which are accompanied by a luscious score by Brant Bjork.
Film is especially suited to being enhanced and deepened by music. When the two meet, the results can be banal, uneven, or brilliant - but they're best when they're surprising. Such is the case with Sabbia, a collaboration between musician BRANT BJORK and filmmaker KATE McCABE. The vastness of the deserts, their sweep and scope and giant emptiness waiting to be filled with raw sound, has always been prominent in Bjork's music, and it finds suitable expression in McCabe's airy, unethered visualization of those parts of California where "wasted" describes the landscape instead of the people. Conjuring in bits and pieces, everything from Van Sant's Gerry to Wilfred Thesiger's Arabian Sands, Bjork & McCabe's Sabbia crowds with the empty desert with sights and sounds that seem not so much natural as inevitable.
