Jason Moran - Piano
Tarus Mateen - Bass
Nasheet Waits - Drums
Sam Rivers - Tenor Saxophone, Soprano Saxaphone, Flute, Piano (#11)

The extraordinary pianist/composer Jason Moran puts forward his distinct creative vision on his bold new recording, Black Stars, his third as leader for Blue Note Records. Jason's working trio (with bassist Tarus Mateen and drummer Nasheet Waits) is augmented by the invaluable contributions of brilliantly innovative and legendary saxophonist/composer Sam Rivers.
Jason's scalding solo excursions, Mateen and Waits rhythmic energy and River's fiery tenor, along with an unexpected Moran / Rivers duet epitomizes the creativity at work throughout this session. Drawing inspiration from the likes of Bartok, Public Enemy, Bjork, Ellington, Monk, Herbie Nichols, Cecil Taylor and Randy Weston, Moran has fused it all together to produce a most singular musical vision.

This is pianist Jason Moran's third recording as a leader for Blue Note, and it is arguably his best. Only 26 when he recorded it, the pianist had the maturity to invite saxophone giant Sam Rivers (77 years old at the time!) to join Moran's trio, and it is a testimony to Moran's abilities that Rivers accepted. Moran has acknowledged his debt to jazz greats Andrew Hill and Herbie Nichols, two towering yet underrated giants of jazz piano and composition, and their influences show. Moran evidences an affinity for complicated snakelike post-bop lines and solo improvisations that get to the heart of a melody. His style is never showy; he embraces simple, emotional statements sophisticated in their mystery. Rivers' presence is a clear asset, and threatens to overwhelm the pianist at times. In fact, on some of the pieces it might appear that Rivers is the leader and Moran an excellent accompanist, a not unenviable position in itself. But Moran holds his own, evidencing a deep understanding of the jazz tradition that belies his youth. Moran keeps one eye on his influences and another to the future, something that Rivers has always done so well. By including a deft mixture of tunes written by Rivers and originals by Moran, and throwing in a bold trio version of Ellington's "Kinda Dukish," Moran offers a program that is both accessible and challenging.

Jason Moran

Active Decades: '90s and '00s
Genre: Jazz
Styles: Post-Bop

Brooklyn resident Jason Moran brings a distinctly artistic touch to his jazz compositions and piano playing. The impressionistic approach of visual and musical artists like Jean-Michel Basquiat and Maurice Ravel inspire Moran's playing and writing style, on both his own compositions and his work with jazz contemporaries like Cassandra Wilson, Steve Coleman, Greg Osby, and Stefan Harris. Moran's debut album Soundtrack to Human Motion appeared in 1999; Facing Left followed a year later. In 2001 he released Black Stars, which featured his trio, comprised also of bassist Tarus Mateen and drummer Nasheet Waits, joined by saxophone legend Sam Rivers. A year later he took a much different approach on Modernistic, offering an album of solo piano recordings. Since that time, Moran released the live album The Bandwagon in 2003 and Artist In Residence in 2006
