Jazz / Easy Listening; Instrumental Pop; Pop; Jazz-Pop Herb Alpert - trumpet; John Pisano - electric guitar; Tonni Kalash - trumpet; Bob Edmondson - trombone; Lou Pagani - piano; Pat Senatore - bass guitar; Nick Ceroli - drums. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A comeback from the relatively disappointing initial sales of Herb Alpert's Tijuana Brass, Vol. 2, South of the Border was helped considerably by the selection of the tune "Mexican Shuffle" by the Clark Teaberry Gum Company as its commercial theme. The album became Alpert's first Top Ten hit and fifth gold record. Despite that success, however, for the most part it found Alpert simply applying his double-tracked-trumpet-and-Mexican-band style to a series of disparate pop favorites, from Antonio Carlos Jobim's "The Girl From Ipanema" to the Beatles' "All My Loving." He did impart a warm melancholy to "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face," but did you ever really want to hear "Hello, Dolly!" sung with a Spanish accent? ---William Ruhlmann, allmusic
1964's South Of The Border peaked at #6 on the Billboard charts, and showed Herb's magic touch on some of the era's most popular hits. Covers of Jobim's "The Girl From Ipanema" and The Beatles' "All My Loving" were set alongside Spanish love songs. |
