Lester Young
Classic shorts with various jam sessions featuring Lester Young, Harry Edison, Illinois Jacquet, Barney Kessel, Jo Jones, Buck Clayton, Buddy Tate , Don Byas, Clark Terry, Buddy DeFranco, Helen Humes and others.
This milestone of documentary filmmaking is an assemblage of 1944 jam sessions. Featuring some of the best jazz musicians of the time, they back Lester Young on improvised selections of the jump blues. Joining Count Basie on piano and Young on tenor sax were Illinois Jacquet (tenor sax), Clark Terry (trumpet), Jimmy Rushing (vocals), Harry Sweets Edison (trumpet), Walter Page (bass), and Barney Kessel (guitar), among many others. Interestingly, Kessel was the only white performer in the group, and he was placed in the shadows with his hands stained with berry juice to make him appear darker. Significantly, this constitutes the only appearance on film of many of these performers, and is thus an important historical document. The film won an Oscar Award for filmmaker and LIFE photographer Gjon Mili.
