This collection of soul-sounding Bryant was originally released by Sue in 1964, and featured his covers of "Goldfinger," "Since I Fell For You," and a newer version of his hit "Little Susie."
Ray Bryant is a master of soul-jazz but these 1964 studio recordings are a bit of a disappointment. Plagued by a plodding rhythm section with bassist Tommy Bryant and either Walter Perkins or Sonny Brown on drums, Bryant leans a bit too heavily toward rhythm & blues, while his music might have been more interesting heard as piano solos. A piano of questionable tuning and muddy sound hardly helps matters. Among the better tracks are the driving "Gospel Bird" and the soulful interpretation of "Please Send Me Someone to Love." The funky take of "Goldfinger" (the theme of the famous movie, with a bossa nova rhythm, no less) is so bad it is unintentionally comical. The Collectables CD reissue of this Sue LP adds its own shortcomings by omitting composer credits. Most fans of Ray Bryant can safely bypass this release.
