Few jazz artists have managed to create a truly popular profile while maintaining a musically respected one. How much rarer, then, has been the jazz artist who remains a big seller, as much for his instrumental artistry as for his singing? And yet Chet Baker's appeal in his lifetime, as great as it was, cannot match what has taken hold since his death. With each year his image gets burnished further. His sound on trumpet and his voice convey a fragility, at almost any tempo, that is truly heartbreaking and which feeling may tell us as much about the times we live in as it does about Baker himself.
This fine sampler has music from most of the periods of trumpeter Chet Baker's career, programmed in chronological order. Baker is heard with the Gerry Mulligan Quartet ("Freeway"), leading his own quartet with pianist Russ Freeman (including "My Funny Valentine"), and on selections from 1964, 1965, 1977, and 1983 ("Stella By Starlight" with Stan Getz). Although far from complete, this CD does give listeners a good glimpse at Baker's playing and singing (he takes vocals on eight of the 13 numbers) and does not shy away from his underrated late-period work. ---Scott Yanow, All Music Guide |
