In 1934, after 11 years with the Fletcher Henderson Orchestra, Hawkins became interested in other musical environments. He found his niche for a time in Europe playing with Michael Warlop and his Orchestra and his own groups. (Upon his return to the states, he was to record the song that would forever become his trademark, "Body & Soul.") Needless to say, Hawkins was a hit overseas in the '30s. And the music that was recorded from that period documents his unique, indeed revolutionary, style and musical acuity. It's interesting to hear him play with legends such as Stephane Grappelli and Django Reinhardt. Grappelli only plays piano on these sessions; Reinhardt, however, plays a wonderful solo on the uptempo burner "Avalon." Other sessions here include great performances by Benny Carter (alto saxophone) and Freddy Johnson (piano). Hawkins, is in fine form on all 18 tracks but he shines particularly brightly on the bouncy "Sweet Georgia Brown" and the stately "Netcha's Dream."
