Alvin Queen was 11 years old when he was presented at the annual Gretsch Drum Night beside Art Blakey, Elvin Jones, Max Roach, Mel Lewis and Charlie Persip. A year later, the child prodigy did his first studio recording with the likes of Joe Newman, Zoot Sims and Hank Jones. By age 15 "the kid" frequently took part in jam sessions in Manhattan nightclubs and lofts such as the Doom and Slug's. As a member of the Don Pullen Trio he spent several months with singer Ruth Brown who featured the trio. In 1969 19-year-old Alvin Queen received an offer that changed his life: He became Billy Cobham's successor in the Horace Silver Quintet and stayed with Silver on and off for more than six years. When commercial pressure started to push jazz off the road, Alvin Queen decided to go to Europe and moved permanently to Geneva, Switzerland in 1979. Due to his swinging, powerful and versatile drum style, Alvin was called to perform or record with all the giants -- among them Terence Blanchard, Dizzy Gillespie, Dexter Gordon, Johnny Griffin, Milt Jackson, Wynton Marsalis, Branford Marsalis, Oscar Peterson, Pharoah Sanders, Stanley Turrentine and Randy Weston.

For his new album as a leader, "I Ain't Looking At You", Alvin chose a selection of downhome swinging standards and originals as well as a bunch of colleagues deeply in the know. Seasoned tunes by such as Miles Davis and Victor Feldman, McCoy Tyner and Horace Silver lead us back to the good old days of bop and cool. Trumpeter Terell Stafford, "one of the great players of our time" (McCoy Tyner), and alto saxist Jesse Davis, winner of Down Beat's "Most Outstanding Musician Award" (who also contributed the funky title tune), make up for a thrilling team of front men. Organ player Mike LeDonne -- "incredible" (Oscar Peterson), "a startling revelation" (Milt Jackson) -- not only wrote two tunes (among them the Basie-like midtempo sneaker "Shirley's Song") but also brings his B3 groove to two classic Hammond blues, Shirley Horn's "There's Blues Everywhere" and Don Patterson's "Mellow Soul". Guitarist Peter Bernstein has long been hailed as the most versatile of band guitarists and "one of the busiest guitarists in the New York area".

"I Ain't Looking At You" is a first-class small group affair swinging with the spirit of jazz history. Last but not least, the music's power and authenticity is guaranteed by the leader himself whose artful drumming, fiery breaks and smo-o-o-oth drive push the band up to the higher grounds of swingland.

Alvin Queen

Active Decades: '70s, '80s, '90s and '00s
Born: Aug 16, 1950 in New York, NY
Genre: Jazz
Styles: Hard Bop

A crisp, powerful, and swinging drummer, Alvin Queen hasn't recorded as often as his talents merit, but what he's done is consistently engaging and demanding. Queen worked with George Benson and Stanley Turrentine, then traveled to Europe with Charles Tolliver's quartet. During the '70s, he worked with the group Music Inc., co-led by Tolliver and Stanley Cowell. Queen departed America in 1979 for Switzerland, and established Nilva Records. He then toured France with Plas Johnson and Harry Edison, and recorded with John Collins and Junior Mance in the '80s; while also working in Zurich with a trio led by Wild Bill Davis and recording with another led by Lonnie Smith. He also did his own dates. Queen has no sessions currently available on CD, but can be heard on reissues by Music Inc.
