On the one hand Fats Waller was one of the most virtuoso jazz greats ever to have graced the stage, on the other he was a comical figure that seemed to be just a genial clown. There are very few photos of this magnificent musician where he is not posing with a huge grin stretching from ear-to-ear. But he was certainly more than that. One only had to watch his hands - and to look beyond those twinkling mischievous eyes to discover the intelligence of an extremely talented musician and songwriter.
