Fish first came to the notice of music fans as the front man for neo progressive rock band Marillion. The band had secured a recording deal with EMI records in late 1982 and released their debut album Script For A Jesters Tear in 1983. Further albums including Fugazi and the massively popular Misplaced Childhood album which spawned a number of top twenty singles including Kayleigh ensured that Marillion became on of the biggest British rock bands at the time. The bands final album featuring Fish was Clutching At Straws. Again the band toured in support of that album and following touring duties again began work on the proposed follow up. During the sessions for the follow up Fish left the band and commenced on a solo career that continues to this dayThis DVD is the companion release to the Return To Childhood CD which was recorded in Holland during the twentieth anniversary tour in November 2005 to celebrate the release of the Marillion album Misplaced Childhood. The DVD includes the full performance of the Misplaced Childhood album and also other solo material from Fish such as Credo and Big Wedge alongside Marillion classics Market Square Heroes and Incommunicado.

The live album Return to Childhood was recorded on Fish's 2005 tour of the same name, because after a first set featuring the Scottish prog rocker's best solo material, the second set (or disc, here) is a 20th anniversary live re-creation of Marillion's 1985 album Misplaced Childhood. Somewhat surprisingly, the new version works quite well, with all of the technical mastery of the familiar album but adding a bracing immediacy that dated mid-'80s production values can't touch. The highlight, as on the original album, is the unexpectedly poppy ballad "Kayleigh," the closest Marillion ever came to a standard love song and by far their biggest single; in this version, the lower register that is Fish's normal range these days allows for a somewhat bitter, rueful edge to creep into the "I never meant to break your heart" refrain. The addition of an encore of three older Marillion favorites including an epic closing version of "Fugazi" makes the second disc a must for fans. As for the first disc, for all of the striking similarities, vocally speaking, between Fish and Peter Gabriel, the former did not manage to make the artistic leap from group to solo artist as gracefully, with even the best songs here sounding like pale imitations of Marillion. Even hardcore Fish-heads will turn to the second disc more often. [Snapper Music reissued the album as a DVD in 2006, adding a bonus backstage interview.]

Fish

Active Decades: '80s and '90s
Born: Apr 25, 1958 in Edinburgh, Scotland
Genre: Rock
Styles: Prog-Rock, Contemporary Pop/Rock, Neo-Prog, Album Rock, Art Rock

Born April 25, 1958, in Edinburgh, Scotland, Derek William Dick (aka Fish) was the dramatic lead vocalist for prog rock band Marillion until beginning a solo career in 1988. Marillion was initially formed as an instrumental band in 1979 by guitarist Steve Rothery (b. November 25, 1959; Brampton, England), drummer Mick Pointer, bassist Doug Irvine, and keyboard player Brian Jelliman. Irvine began singing in 1980 on the group's first demos, but a year later Marillion invited Fish to join as vocalist, and he assumed the frontman position beginning with their 1983 debut album, Script for a Jester's Tear. His strong Peter Gabriel-inspired vocals enforced critics' accusations that Marillion owed more than just a heavy debt to Genesis, but six more albums followed. Musical difficulties between Fish and the band caused him to leave after 1988's Thieving Magpie (La Gazza Ladra). He was replaced by Steve Hogarth (b. May 14, 1956; Kendal, England), a vocalist quite similar in sound and style to Fish himself.
In 1989, Fish worked with Peter Hammill on Hammill's Fall of the House of Usher project, but was then replaced by Andy Bell. His debut solo album, Vigil in a Wilderness of Mirrors, appeared one year later and continued the theatrical flair of Marillion's quasi-concept albums. After 1991's Internal Exile and the 1993 covers album Songs from the Mirror, he moved from EMI to Dick Bros. The Acoustic Session CD appeared in 1994, and one year later Fish released a double album (released separately), Yin and Yang. Sunsets on Empire was issued in 1997, followed by the well-received Raingods With Zippos on Chocolate Frog Records in 1999. During the new millennium Fish has continued releasing CDs on the Chocolate Frog label, including 2002's Fellini Days, 2003's Sashimi double-CD set recorded live in Poland, and 2004's Field of Crows. Fish released 13th Star in 2007 and embarked on a North American tour the following year.
