Jazz / Third Stream; Cool
Recorded: 1952-Jan 1955
The Modern Jazz Quartet was originally formed in 1952 as the Milt Jackson Quartet and consisted of Jackson on vibraphone, John Lewis on piano, Percy Heath on bass and Kenny Clarke on drums.
This bootleg LP is for the true Modern Jazz Quartet fanatic. It contains seven selections taken from Jan. 1955 Birdland radio broadcasts. The recording quality is just so-so but the playing by the classic group (which at the time still featured Kenny Clarke on drums) is decent. However the set (which has no liner notes or basic information) is far from essential, especially considering how many other MJQ recordings are currently available. ---Scott Yanow, allmusic |
