A major force on the 1960s jazz scene, Roland Kirk was both cutting-edge and accessible--his approach celebrated the blues and gospel traditions that preceded bebop, but also stretched the musical boundaries of the time. Originally recorded for Atlantic Records (before he'd adopted the name Rahsaan), HERE COMES THE WHISTLEMAN is Kirk recorded live in front of a small studio audience in New York City. Accompanied by a quartet that features Lonnie Liston Smith and Jaki Byard (here listed as "Jackie") alternating on piano, Kirk is typically astonishing.
Playing two or three reed instruments at once (with, of course, no overdubbing), Kirk also incorporates wild flute lines over catchy, funky backing (think Horace Silver, Les McCann) that moves the crowd to handclap along. For the Byard original "Aluminum Baby" (featuring a brightly lyrical solo by the composer), Kirk switches between pretty and jagged playing on the manzello (a member of the saxophone family). Throughout, Kirk infuses his heartfelt, passionate delivery with an irreverent, slightly wacky sense of humor, as if he realized there is no law prohibiting edgy music from also being great fun. |
