According to an old-time myth, only a blind man can truly understand the meaning of the blues. On the deeply passionate CD, “We Free Kings”, Roland Kirk transforms this myth to reality. On the title track, Kirk has converted the traditional Christmas carol into a melancholy contemporary gospel performance. Charlie Parker’s “Blues for Alice”, is gracefully covered as Kirk unveils his tenor simultaneously on two horns. He repeats his dual horn performance on “Sack Full of Soul” a contemporary, staccato, gospel blues performance also for tenor and manzello. As he plays two-and-three horns at once, without the aid of electronic stunt work, Kirk is skillfully mastering integrated arrangements with genuine musical capabilities. Kirk not only plays the blues he sings them as well. The blues are delivered slow and easy on “You Did It, You Did It”, where Kirk cries out earnestly while emphasizing his sorrow on his flute. On this selection you will find the joys of happiness along with the woes of sadness, carefully put together to beautiful music. |
