The 1982 self-titled album is their final featuring bass guitarist Jaco Pastorius and
drummer Peter Erskine in the rhythm section, bringing to an end what many fans
considered the best lineup in the band’s history. Compositionally this album is dominated
almost completely by Joe Zawinul. But this was often the case anyway. Explosive tracks
like “Volcano For Hire” with a Peter Erskine who is that volcano erupting in one of the
baddest funk drum grooves ever on record, “Current Affairs” and the ten minute + “NYC”
all help one realize how much Joe Zawinul took musically from his time with Miles.
Zawinul, Wayne, Erskine and Jaco do a superlative job with a strong, solid musical score.

* Jaco Pastorius - Bass
* Joe Gastwirt - Remastering, Remixing
* Joe Zawinul - Keyboards, Producer, Synthesizer
* Peter Erskine - , Drums
* Robert Thomas, Jr. -

After establishing themselves as the premiere fusion group of the '70s, Weather Report achieved legendary status with albums like HEAVY WEATHER, BLACK MARKET and MR. GONE. This self-titled disc from 1982, though often overlooked, is one of their strongest efforts. This is due in large part to the stirring interplay between bassist Jaco Pastorius and drummer Peter Erskine. Though the group's leadership was handled expertly by co-founders Joe Zawinul and Wayne Shorter, it was the musical relationship between Pastorius and Erskine that clearly defined this period of Weather Report's existence.

The dynamic drumming that opens "Volcano For Hire" supports agile melodic lines by Zawinul and Shorter and the rumbling bass figures of Pastorius. Changing scenes, the serene "Current Affairs" features Shorter's wailing tenor in a beautiful ballad setting. The album's centerpiece is the three-part suite "N.Y.C." Its opening section, "41st Parallel," is a bouncing groove that features Erskine's sensitive yet powerful touch. The second part, "The Dance," is a very traditional swing feel but with Zawinul's heavy synth overlay. The third, "Crazy About Jazz," is a happy shuffle that aptly reflects its title. Other standout tracks include the funky "Dara Factor One" and the gorgeous "Speechless."

For some crafty reason, Weather Report gave its 11th Columbia album the same eponymous title as its first, which no doubt led to massive retail confusion. It is the last WR album for Peter Erskine, Jaco Pastorius, and Robert Thomas, Jr.; Thomas left the band soon afterwards. And with Pastorius receding a bit into the background, the creative balance tilts heavily toward Joe Zawinul, who contributes all but one of the seven compositions. "Volcano for Hire" and "Dara Factors One and Two" are the requisite Zawinul groove-athons, and his deepening awareness of the rapidly improving synthesizer's harmonic and timbral possibilities color such tracks as "Current Affairs" and the three-part "N.Y.C." suite. Though the creativity level seems to be on medium-tank here, the band could still startle the ear with surprising new sounds, a supremely pithy Wayne Shorter statement, or fresh Third World spices. Their ability to swing is never in doubt.
