Combining vivid compositions with some burning, loose improvising, veteran saxophonist/composer Gordon Brisker is a special player who creates rock solid real jazz. Besides his strong personal tenor sound, Brisker has the ability to compose vivid tunes that find contrapuntal space and open doors for his bandmates' imagination. Further enhancing the music here is Mike Nock's eclectic modern playing and trumpeter Tim Hagans' originality. My Son John is a fascinating musical document with a bounty of rewards.
Timed with the release, Brisker returns to the U.S. after a five-year stint as lecturer at the University of Sydney Among the most underrated tenor saxophonist and composer Sidemen include Naxos Jazz music director Mike Nock on piano Tim Hagans is a Blue Note recording artist and multiple Grammy jazz nominee.
An unsung force from the West Coast scene, Gordon Brisker is one of the best composer/arranger around and he deserves much more attention than he has received. He earned his stripes in Los Angeles as a writer for hire. Besides his own group, he has performed with Gerry Mulligan, the Woody Herman Herd and Anita O'Day. Recently, he has completed a five-year stint as lecturer at the University of Sydney and returned to America. His recordings include About Charlie (Discovery), featuring Tom Harrell, as well as his Naxos Jazz debut, The Gift, in 1997.

On this 2001 recording, veteran tenor saxophonist Gordon Brisker shows a much stronger John Coltrane influence than usual. His post-bop quintet, which also includes trumpeter Tim Hagans, pianist Mike Nock, bassist Anthony Cox, and drummer Billy Hart, performs a rather dry set of music comprised of six Brisker originals, Nock's "The Open Path," an unusual reworking of "The Meaning of the Blues," and a modal-oriented "You Got to My Head." The musicians all play well, but not a lot of warmth is expressed and Brisker's originals are generally not too memorable. This is easier music to respect than to love.
