Jazz
In early spring 2000, some of the finest groups in Seattle donated a week of performances at Mack Waldron's "Tula's" as a tribute to his continued devotion to live jazz in Seattle and to help raise money for a new piano. As part of that project, Origin Records produced this compilation CD from recordings by many of the artists who donated their time, creating a snapshot of the very vibrant Seattle jazz community.
Stemming from a donation drive for a local jazz club, this compilation deals out an overview of some of the best jazz Seattle has to offer. While the title alludes to the piano as a centerpiece, the album doesn't focus so strongly on it. Every track save one includes an outstanding pianist (Marc Seales, John Hansen, and Dave Peck are among the brightest of the bunch), but they're often overshadowed by some incredible horn players, vocalists, and the occasional bassist and drummer (both posts are held solidly throughout). You'll pick this one up for the piano solos, but keep listening to it for the whole picture. ---Adam Greenberg, allmusic |
