Jazz Modern Creative Avant-Garde Jazz Modern Composition Third Stream
This early work from the hands of Israeli pianist Yitzhak Yedid is remarkable for both its maturity and its haunting expressiveness. Yedid's roots in classical music are clearly evident, more so than in some of his later, jazz-oriented albums, yet the freedom with which he allows himself to interpret his own compositions reveals an inner depth that flows naturally. Yedid falls in the line of versatile pianists such as Uri Caine and Marilyn Crispell and, to an extent, John Law and Ran Blake, as Yedid exhibits an extraordinary presence and can play almost anything that comes to mind in a multitude of genres. The six compositions were penned by the pianist except "Mohe Bhool Gaye Sanwariya," a North Indian film song. All are well-paced and exhibit bittersweet elements that do not so much dazzle as lure. For example, "The Pessimist Optimist" repeats and varies a simple line played by the left hand, leading to a jump in octaves and intensity with an incremental increase in tempo. There is a sort of fusion by the end of the piece, but as with the other selections, Yedid's interpretations are filled with sly nuance, resulting in a highly satisfying journey down a peaceful river that gurgles ever so slightly beneath the surface. "Full Moon Fantasy" is even slower, as sound resonates in a way that Italian composer Giacinto Scelsi might have appreciated. Some devotees of Yedid might find this to be and album of mixed results, due to its sloth-like pace and its considerable influences from classical music. Those willing to open to its pleasures should appreciate the exquisite colors and heightened sensitivity. It deservedly helped launch the career of a talented artist. ---Steven Loewy, allmusic
