Called "A pioneer...a true British jazz original." by The Times, "An inventive and underrated jazz figure" by Jazziz and "Britain's most original jazz talent." by The Financial Times, Graham Collier is one of the best known British jazz composers, and over a 40 year career, his list of compositions and comissions has grown to encompass ensembles around the world. He is well known as an aurthor and educator, having written seven books on jazz. He was born in Tynemouth, England in 1937. He won a Downbeat scholarship to Berkless School of Music, Boston, studying with Herb Pomeroy and becoming its first British graduate in 1963. Returning to Britain, he formed the first of many line-ups known as Graham Collier Music, which over the years has featured almost every British jazz musician of note. Workpoints consists of two previously unreleased concerts from 'a golden age of British jazz': one from 1968 and one from 1975. The music is composed with lots of room for contributions from the individual players, and in that regard, might be comparable to the work of one of Graham's heroes, Charles Mingus. The album features a huge number of well known jazz musicians, such as: Harry Beckett, Mike Gibbs, Karl Jenkins, Frank Ricotti, Henry Lowther, John Marshall, John Surman, Art Themen, Kenny Wheeler and others. Included in the booklet are archival photos, notes and comments from Graham.

Two valuable if obscure dates led by British bassist-composer Graham Collier are issued for the first time on this double CD. Collier leads a 12-piece jazz orchestra in 1968 that includes trumpeters Kenny Wheeler and Harry Beckett, baritonist John Surman, and trombonist Mike Gibbs as the biggest names, although some of the lesser-known players are also well featured. The music is adventurous and swinging in its own fashion, but also influenced by the avant-garde and looking towards the even freer British jazz of the 1970s. The second disc, "Live in Middleheim," is from 1975 and has Collier leading a sextet that includes Beckett and tenor saxophonist Art Themen with a four-piece rhythm section. The use of electric piano and some of the grooves hint strongly at early fusion such as that being done by Miles Davis circa 1969. Although this music has its moments of interest, it often rambles on too long, making the first disc (which has a wider variety of soloists) the more satisfying of the set.

Styles: Big Band, Modern Creative, Modern Big Band, Avant-Garde Jazz, Experimental Big Band

Composer. English composer Graham Collier was the first British student to graduate from Berklee College of Music. Collier won a scholarship in 1961, after playing more than seven years in an army band. He toured briefly in 1963 with the Jimmy Dorsey orchestra playing bass, then returned to England where he formed the Graham Collier Ensemble. This group through the '60s,'70s and '80s has contained many of Britain's finest musicians, gathered to play Collier's original compositions. It's varied in size and personnel; some alumni include Harry Beckett, Kenny Wheeler and John Surman. Collier established a big band, Hoarded Dreams, in 1983. It debuted at the Bracknell Jazz Festival with a lineup bolstered by such special guests as Ted Curson and Manfred Schoof. Then the next year he began a rehearsal ensemble that late became the nucleus of the group Loose Tubes. Collier became a professor and eventually director of jazz studies at the Royal Academy of Music in London. He was awarded an Order of the British Empire by the Queen in 1987 for contributions to jazz, and has also written music for several plays, films and television, plus authored a number of books. Since 1974, Collier has owned and managed Britain's now defunct Mosaic label, not to be confused with America's premier reissue operation. Collier was also a founder member and member of the board of the International Association of Schools of Jazz and ran its magazine, Jazz Changes, for seven years until it publication ended in 2000. Collier now lives in southern Spain and continues to compose and tour internationally. Recent projects have included work with the Danish Radio Jazz Orchestra and the NDR Big Band, and concerts throughout Europe and in the USA and Australia.
