Jazz / Soul-Jazz; Hard Bop
Recorded: Jan 10 & 17, 1969, Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey
Randy Brecker - trumpet, flugelhorn Bennie Mupin - tenor sax, flute Horace Silver - piano John Williams - bass Billy Cobham - drums
Although this quintet with Charles Tolliver in place of Randy Brecker debuted on the second half of "SerenadeTo A Soul Sister," this album, despite its "could only happen in the sixties" artwork, is among Silver's best, if least recognized, efforts. The compositions, six by Silver and one by Maupin, and the playing are excellent throughout. This album makes its first appearance on CD.
One of the final Horace Silver Quintet Blue Note albums, this somewhat forgotten LP, dedicated to "the Brotherhood of Men," is an instrumental set that introduced six new compositions by the pianist/leader (none of which caught on as standards) along with Bennie Maupin's "Lovely's Daughter." Maupin (on tenor and flute), trumpeter Randy Brecker, bassist John Williams, and drummer Billy Cobham comprise Silver's excellent late-'60s hard bop group. [In 2007 Blue Note reissued You Gotta Take a Little Love in a remastered Rudy Van Gelder edition.] ---Scott Yanow, allmusic |
