M.F. Horn 3 which reached #8 on The Billboard Jazz Albums chart and a respectable #128 on the Billboard Pop Albums chart. Again, Ferguson performs with his English band featuring other famed musicians including Pete Jackson, Randy Jones and Bruce Johnstone. On this volume, Ferguson steps back into Jazz mode, albeit with a more commercial edge.
Maynard Ferguson's M.F. Horn series for Columbia mixed together jazz versions of pop and rock music, hurting the trumpeter's reputation with the jazz collectors but helping him to become practically a household name. This set has some worthwhile pieces (notably "Awright, Awright," "'Round Midnight" and "Nice 'N Juicy") and some spirited ensemble playing; the most notable among Ferguson's sidemen in this English big band are pianist Pete Jackson, drummer Randy Jones and baritonist Bruce Johnstone. The music on the LP is not essential but has its exciting moments.
