On the back of this Verve compilation, it reads, "Everything Antonio Carlos Jobim wrote, played, or sang was for lovers." This is a true fact, but the compilers chose to present a very balanced look at Jobim's career, grabbing songs from the '60s, '70s, and '80s instead of zeroing in on the time of his greatest accomplishments, the early to mid-'60s. ---John Bush, allmusic
In his native Brazil, Antonio Carlos Jobim (1927-1994) is virtually Bob Dylan and George Gershwin combined. Jobim was a singer, songwriter, pianist, and guitarist who practically invented bossa nova by blending Brazilian folk and pop, jazz, and the Impressionism of classical composer Claude Debussy. He's so renowned as a songwriter--Frank Sinatra, Sergio Mendes, and Stan Getz, among others, performed his creations--many don't know him as a singer. His soothingly romantic delivery in FOR LOVERS makes for elegant, near-perfect late-evening listening.
With unforgettable melodies and pulsating rhythms that are impossible to resist, Antonio Carlos Jobim virtually defined bossa nova. If you love bossa nova - and who doesn't? - then you love Jobim.
Jobim the performer was every bit as captivating as Jobim the composer, whether his instrument was the piano, the guitar, or his own quietly expressive voice. And whatever the song, the underlying theme was the same: love, in all its sometimes frustrating, often mystifying, but always enchanting variations.
Everything Antonio Carlos Jobim wrote, played, or sang was for lovers. Here are some of the finest examples. |
