When one thinks of the vibraphone, their thoughts often drift to jazz's rich history of elegant stylists like Milt Jackson, Cal Tjader and Bobby Hutcherson. In fact most would be hard-pressed to name a vibraphonist of note who's emerged from the mainstream jazz world in the 21st century. But if you look to the far corners of improvisational music (the scene that includes artists like Skerik, Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey, Charlie Hunter and Steven Bernstein among others), you'll find the wonderkind vibes player, Mike Dillon. A mainstay as a percussionist with artists like Ani DiFranco and Les Claypool, Dillon fills a huge void in the instruments presence in modern music. He and his band, Mike Dillon's Go-Go Jungle, make their recording debut with Battery Milk. A recording of amazing sonic diversity, this isn't vibes music that attempts to recreate past sentiments, but rather updates the tradition completely. Ranging from funked-out soul jazz to subversive political statements to hard-driving Zappa-esque instrumental rock, Mike Dillon's Go-Go Jungle is one of the hippest records you'll hear all year.
Born and raised in Houston, Texas, Mike Dillon's musical history runs deep. In the late '80s and early '90s, he was a member of the pivotal Texas bands Billy Goat and Hairy Apes BMX. He soon moved onto acclaimed experimental and improvisational bands like The Malachy Papers, Critters Buggin and Garage A Trois, configurations in which he still plays to this day. He would also collaborate with MC 900 Ft. Jesus, Secret Chiefs 3, Polyphonic Spree and Sex Mob.
Mike Dillon is known to furiously circulate around the country, simultaneously calling Austin, New Orleans and Kansas City home. It's through these nomadic experiences that he connected with his highest profile gigs yet, recording and touring the world as a percussionist with both Ani DiFranco and Les Claypool's Frog Brigade; projects which have been a mainstay of his world for the past few years. And yet somehow in the midst of all this, Dillon put together Go-Go Jungle in early 2006. The band features Dillon's longtime musical co-conspirators, including Mark Southerland on tenor saxophone, JJ "Jungle" Richards and Ron Johnson on bass guitar and Go-Go Ray Pollard on drums. |
