David "Fathead" Newman - alto & tenor saxophones, flute
Steve Turre - trombone; John Hicks - piano; Steve Novosel - bass; Winard Harper - drums; Steve Kroon - percussion

David 'Fathead' Newman is inexorably moving to that exalted state of a legend. In Fathead's case it's true. He was a cornerstone of Ray Charles' Band. The Texas tenor tradition inhabits his playing like the slight Texas accent Newman never lost. Fathead performs enjoyable, intricate, intense, sophisticated music. His solos are finely crafted there are no superfluous notes. Newman surrounds himself with the top men of their craft on each instrument. Steve Turre, trombone, John Hicks, piano, Winard Harper, drums, etc. On this CD, David 'Fathead' Newman makes a very solid statement not a rehash but fresh and inspiring. The product of a major player in his prime.
