When they talk about cool jazz, they don’t come much cooler than Miles Dewey Davis 111 born in 1926.
This addition to the cool jazz titles in the Essential Collection range features Miles from 1953-1955, a period of transition for the trumpeter and leader, which would culminate in his late 50's masterpiece Kind Of Blue.
Here he works out with such legendary names as Charles Mingus, John Lewis, Max Roach, Percy Heath, Art Blakey, Horace Silver, Elvin Jones and Thelonious Monk. Phew! The list is quite breathtaking and so is the music, superbly re-mastered on this double CD.

During the time period of 1953-1955, post-Birth of the Cool and pre-collaborations with John Coltrane, Miles Davis was the undisputed King of Hard Bop. These studio sessions, reissued from the Prestige Records vaults, capture a short span when Miles, it could be said, was truly in his prime. All of the 25 cuts on the two-CD set are solid examples of the trumpet sound Davis was brandishing and burnishing, with substantial help on select tracks from the likes of Sonny Rollins, John Lewis, Thelonious Monk, Charles Mingus, Max Roach, Art Blakey, Milt Jackson, and J.J.
