Drummer Idris Muhammad is one of African-American music's great rhythmic revolutionaries. During the Fifties in his native New Orleans, he was at the forefront of creating a style of R & B drumming that became known as funk. A decade later in New York, he began applying his distinctive syncopations to jazz, setting the pulse for what would come to be called acid jazz. Muhammad's first two albums as a leader are contained herein, and their grooves are chock full of some of the funkiest trap patterns and break beats ever captured in a recording studio. Helping Muhammad lead the charge throughout is another acid-jazz giant--guitarist Melvin Sparks. |
