John has grown tired of the "synthetic cubism" of typical Rodgers- Hart, Kern chord changes and feels the coming together of the two idioms is a way for jazz to extend its origins and scene in an authentic, fruitful way. In Zoot Sims, on alto for this date; Al Cohn, baritone; Nick Travis, trumpet; Ossie Johnson, drums; Buddy Jones, bass; Barry Galbraith, guitar - John is on piano on "Venezuela", "Saro Jane" and "Joe's Old Folks" only- this date has the benefit of musicians who probe deeply in their solo commentary and ensemble playing to give the music its true value, a deeply melodic one at that.
